How to use this calculator
- Enter kitchen area for project context.
- Replace each sample category budget with a supplier quote or your own allowance.
- Review subtotal, contingency, tax, final plan, and allocation percentages.
The calculation formula
Pre-tax subtotal = sum of categories. Contingency = subtotal × contingency%. Tax allowance = subtotal × tax%. Plan total = subtotal + contingency + tax.
Worked example
With $20,100 of combined categories, a 15% contingency adds $3,015 and 5% tax adds $1,005, for a $24,120 planning total.
Assumptions and limitations
- Illustrative budget entries are not market rates.
- Permits, structural changes, layout complexity, and local sales tax treatment vary; adjust category inputs appropriately.
Actual project costs may be affected by supplier rates, material grade, labor market, location, disposal, site condition, access, permits, taxes, and schedule. All entered prices are yours to revise. See our methodology and disclaimer.
Frequently asked questions
Does kitchen size determine the result?
No. Project size is contextual; category budgets are entirely user-entered.
Is contingency taxed twice?
No. Both contingency and the optional tax allowance use the pre-tax subtotal independently.
